I-140 Aproval notice sent on 10/01/08; I-485 still pending

I received a tenure-track offer from NY, and plan to move in December and start at new position in January 2009 with similar research direction.
Should I do H-1B transfer if I-485 is still pending in the next few months? Is it safe to use EAD?
