From France to Britain

I will go to France with a Schengen visa I got in France Consulate in Washington D.C. My questions are as follows:

 

1). Can I go to Britain with my existing Schengen visa? i.e is Britain one of the members of Schengen?

2). If yes, any suggestions for way(s) of transportation?
