The black screen often occurs because the Ford Smart Charging System has disabled non-essential electronics to preserve remaining battery life for the engine.
- Failing Alternator: This is the most frequent culprit for the "Service Now" message. A mechanic should test for a stable output between 13.5V and 14.5V.
- Corroded Battery Terminals: Check the negative battery cable for "green" corrosion or loose connections. Even small amounts of corrosion can trigger charging alerts.
- Blown Multi-Fuse: A specific 10-amp fuse (often Fuse 46) or a larger multi-purpose fuse can fail, cutting the signal between the alternator and the PCM.
- Broken Alternator Pigtail: The wiring connector at the alternator is known for shearing off due to a lack of strain relief. Inspect the three wires at the alternator plug for breaks.
- Battery Monitor Sensor (BMS): If you recently replaced the battery, the system may still think the old battery is installed. You must perform a BMS Reset (Flash high beams 5x, press brake 3x) to recalibrate the charging.
