Americans tend to change unfamiliar words to familiar words with the same pronounciation to make them easier (or dumber) for the public.

Not sure if the keys carry the same meaning as what LZ said.

It is more likely a direct transformation from Cays - Cays pronounces like Keys, meaning small islands.

Key West is really a tacky place.

The beauty of Florida Keys are outside Key West, such as Dry Tortugas National Park and Briscayne National Park, and some private keys.

The Freedom of Speech in U.S. (or in any civilized western countries) probably will NEVER be achieved in Mainland China.
