DJ China's Economic Decoupling From U.S. Likely to Intensify -- Market Talk
0121 GMT - China's economic decoupling from the U.S. is likely to intensify as trade tensions resurface, says ANZ Research's Raymond Yeung in a note. China's exports have remained stable as exporters have expanded into new markets, with direct shipments to the U.S. decreasing to 12% of overall exports as of August 2025, from 19% in 2018, he says. China's rare-earth import restrictions suggest the authorities are confident of reaching 5.0% economic growth in 2025, even with a 100% U.S. tariff threat, he says. The Trump administration is likely to act quickly, possibly prompting more reciprocal action from China, he adds. "This tit-for-tat is likely to continue for some time, with periodic negotiations, as a new normal in the ongoing trend of China-US economic decoupling." (megan.cheah@wsj.com)
