Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell noted that the central bank is facing a difficult and unusual situation-a weakening labor market combined with still-elevated inflation. Ordinarily, a weaker labor market would call for lower interest rates while elevated inflation would call for a more restrictive policy stance.
It's a "situation where there's two-sided risk, there's no risk-free path," Powell told reporters, a factor reflected in the range of views in the central bank's quarterly Summary of Economic projections.
