Some predict a historic defeat for Democrats in Tuesday's midterm election, with control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate at stake.

The Republicans, who already control the House, are aiming to win the Senate by focusing on a few key battleground states. Races in Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Hampshire and North Carolina will shape President Barack Obama's final two years in office.

In addition to important pieces of legislation on energy and fiscal policy, the Senate outcome will affect any Obama appointments—which could last well beyond his tenure.

The House will also be a battleground, with Republicans hoping to gain more than 10 seats. Governorships and state laws on marijuana are also being closely watched.
