New York City Code Safety Requirement for Stairs

The New York City Building Code outlines specific safety requirements for stairs to ensure the safety and accessibility of buildings. Key requirements include:

• Tread Depth: Stair treads must be at least 11 inches deep to provide sufficient footing for safe movement.

• Riser Height: Risers must not exceed 7 3/4 inches in height to prevent tripping hazards.

• Headroom: The minimum headroom clearance is 6 feet 8 inches to ensure comfortable movement between floors.

• Uniformity: Deviations in tread depth and riser height must not exceed 3/8 of an inch to maintain consistency and prevent missteps.

• Handrails: Handrails must be installed on stairways to provide stability and support. 

  Handrail Height: The top surface of the handrail must be installed between 34 and 38 inches high, measured vertically from the stair nosing’s edge to the surface of the handrail. This range is established to ensure a person can comfortably grasp the rail without having to stoop excessively or reach uncomfortably high.

  Handrail Bracket Distance: Handrails must not project more than 4.5 inches on either side of the stairway. This is to prevent crowding the walking path and ensure a clear, continuous pathway along the entire length of the railing. 

   

   

   

   

   

• Handrail Height: The top surface of the handrail must be installed between 34 and 38 inches high, measured vertically from the stair nosing’s edge to the surface of the handrail. This range is established to ensure a person can comfortably grasp the rail without having to stoop excessively or reach uncomfortably high.

Each step should be intact, no broken or loose boards. The handrail should have enough brackets to provide enough strength. While there may be no specific regulation regarding the distance between brackets, it is suggested distance between two brackets be no more than 4 ft.
