Was there in 2009. Galapagos islands are really safe. Quito seems to be fine for me. A French guy I met on the cruise said he's got all his cameras/cam-corders/wallet stolen on public transit, but that's the worst I've heard. Try not to go to bad neighborhoods at night. Lonely planet has good descriptions on safe vs. unsafe neighbourhoods.
