-When your new employer files I-129 H-1 petition for you, you need to provide the copy of your current (old) H-1 approval notice so that the new employer can put the information of old H-1 (e.g. Receipt#) on I-129. Thus, USCIS know you have the  H-1 status before.

For green card, you need to provide the copy of the old I-140 approval notice to catch the priority date for your new I-140.

So, it is very important for you to have and keep the old H-1 approval notice and the I-140 approval notice.
