Updating DS-2019 of J-1 does not hurt his status, neither does J-2's.
This is similar to I-20 vs F-1.

J-1's new program does not impact J-2 status.
This is similar to H-1b vs H-4.

So I don't see J-2's EAD gets invalid before expiration.
No, I have not done homework on it, while I would like to get it from you.
