请教PJIANG 及各位高人, EAD Expires soon, But renewal still pending

My I-485 is pending. I am using my EAD to work now. But it will expire soon. I think Texas center lost my renewal application. So I just resubmitted another one. What happens if I couldn't get my new EAD before my current one expires? Can I take unpaid leave while I am waiting for my new EAD?
