EAD and 180 day rule after I485 pending

Suppose that I140 is approved.

I read that after I485 is pending for 180 days, you can switch employer.

I also read that when filing I485, you can file for EAD, which allows you to switch employer.

I am confused, if you get EAD, do you still need to wait for 180 days?
