Don't know what your concern is. If it is just money issue, just pay it. H1B is not same as EAD.

The reason is that with H1B you will have two choices. If you don't have H1B, you will only have one choice. EAD is always there as long as your 485 is pending. But H1B is not. If you lost the opportunity to renew it now, it will be hard for you to renew it in the future. But you can renew EAD anytime.

H1B is better than EAD for me. I am on my 9th years H1B now. Even I am working with my H1B, I pay by myself to renew my EAD every year although I have never used it as of now.
