EAD to H1B1, need help

I had an H1B and then used EAD for 6 months. Right now, I applied H1B. My attorney said I have to go back to China and get a stamp, because my 1st H1B was inviolated. Why I have to get a visa if I just keep in H1B status? Any comment is appreciated. Thanks
