You can still use H1 to work in current or transfer to another institution. EAD just makes way easier to find a job or work multiple jobs. Your status will be changed to AOS once EAD is used. This will become extremely danger if your 140 is pending.
Your spouse/dependents will be able to get SSN by showing EAD. Go to local SSN to request one.
