Please Help - AP, EAD and H1-B

I had a trip to China and came back with AP (I485 pending and i did not apply EAD). At the Customs, I was told that my H1-B is not valid anymore. I am wondering whether I still can work based on my H1-B? Or do I need to apply EAD ASAP? Thank you very much.
