Gestational Diabetes May Increase Daughters’ Risk of Obesity Later in Childhood

HealthDay reported that according to a study published Oct. 23 in the journal Diabetes Care, “daughters of women who developed gestational diabetes while pregnant may be at increased risk for being obese later in childhood.” The study, which included some 400 six- to eight-year-old girls in California who were then followed for about six years, found that “girls whose mothers had gestational diabetes were 3.5 times more likely to be overweight later in childhood than those whose mothers did not have gestational diabetes,” and girls “were 5.5 times more likely to become overweight if their moms had gestational diabetes and were overweight before pregnancy.”
