Campus on alert after shooting on School Street

The Dartmouth website home page reports that a non-Dartmouth student was shot at 9:50 p.m. Friday night at the Christian Science Reading Room, located at 1 School Street. The College has received reports of other shots at multiple locations. As of 11:10 p.m., the shooter was still at large.

By 11:35 p.m., the home page had been updated to include links to the College's safety protocols for hostile intruders/active shooters.

 

The Dartmouth Alert system sent out an email around 10 p.m. Friday night indicating that a single gunshot had been fired in the area of School Street and West Wheelock Street in Hanover.

Students also received phone calls and text message alerts about the incident.

A witness to the shooting said she was walking down School Street around 9:40 p.m. when a car drove by her “really fast.” She said she then heard something that “sounded like a slam.”

“I thought it was a gunshot at first — then I was like, ‘There’s no way there’s a gunshot in Hanover,’” the witness said.

The witness said she then heard someone scream and saw him lying on the ground.

“I thought it was a hit and run honestly,” she said.

The witness went into a nearby building and later gave a statement to the police.

The Dartmouth Coach from New York City was initially diverted to Lebanon, and Hanover residents were told to stay there until Hanover Police notifies the driver that it is safe to drive back to Hanover. The Coach had returned to campus by 11 p.m.

Hanover Police Department is on the scene of the shooting and actively searching for the responsible party. An officer from Lebanon on scene said that police from neighboring jurisdictions were also in the area providing assistance.

"This is not a typical evening in Hanover," he said.
