My son happened to be assigned Thailand as subject in his 6th grade social study course.
How the auther could get this wrong???????
The Thais were lucky enough to be on the exact border of influence of France and Britain. Add to that some clever kings and the Thai ability to negotiate anything with anyone.
When the French were getting interested in adding a bit of Thai territory, the king would ask them: are you really sure? Our allies, the British, probably won't like it. Exactly the same if the Brits got the same idea, the other way around. Since neither France nor England was willing to go to war, Thailand remained independent.
Rest assured, if Thailand was located where Cambodia is or Burma: it would have been a colony. No matter how capable the Thai kings were.
