The Ceasefire That Wasn’t: Trump’s Three Days Let Russia Breathe

Mykolaiv — Three days is all it takes for Moscow to move an armored division, saturate Ukrainian skies with drones, and have the families of Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia count the dead.
As was easy to predict, the Russians also systematically violated the so-called ‘three-day truce’ claimed by the White House leader as a personal success after yet another ‘productive’ phone call with the Kremlin.
Since the alleged ceasefire took effect, Russia has attacked Ukraine at night with an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 43 high-explosive drones.
The Russian military has struck hard in the Chernihiv region of Ukraine, killing a man and his son on their farm in the village of Novhorod-Siverskyj. It then struck Sumy, sparking widespread fires in the Berezivka area that forced rescuers to suspend operations to avoid becoming victims. It then struck a nine-story building in Kharkiv, killing at least five people. On the other side of the country, a Russian FPV drone struck a civilian car in the Polohivskyj district of Zaporizhzhia, killing the 67-year-old driver on the spot and seriously injuring a man and a woman in the vehicle.
On May 9, Russian weapons continued to be deployed even in the contact zones, where Vladimir Putin’s army lost another 840 soldiers, 75 artillery systems, 1,489 drones, and 227 military vehicles during assault operations. It’s important to remember this, since after yet another false legal and factual equivalence between the aggressor and the attacked, Donald Trump assured that, thanks to him, “Ukraine and Russia” would no longer kill any more men.
Despite the declared ceasefire, even on May 10, the Russian Armed Forces continued to attack Ukrainian defensive positions. By 4:00 PM on Sunday, the Kyiv General Staff had already recorded 60 attempted breakthroughs, half of which were concentrated toward the Pokrovsk district.
The purpose of these “truces,” favored by the best support the Kremlin has ever had in Washington, remains the same: to transfer weapons and troops to the hottest areas while Ukrainian weapons remain silent.
Exploiting this latest pretext, Russian troops moved the 90th Tank Division to Pokrovsk, using the city’s rubble to amass forces and equipment.
There, the Russians have managed to concentrate a contingent of 106,000 men and are also setting up command posts in Myrnohrad, attempting to use that former urban settlement as a bridgehead to break through toward Rodinske.
The three-day interval granted to Moscow provided the necessary lead time to move such a massive strike force, which otherwise would have required impeccable synchronization among the chain of command, transport vehicles, and supply lines. These are parameters the Russian command certainly could not have optimized under Ukrainian fire.
Advancing toward Hryshyne remains the occupiers’ priority, and any means of forcing the Ukrainian defenders to slow their pace is a gift to Putin, who can now project the operational capacity of another armored division into combat readiness against the Ukrainian fortress belt of the Donbas.
Until the end of the false truce, hailed as a success in Washington, the Russians hammered Ukraine’s most troubled regions.
They attacked the Dnipropetrovsk region with two drones, also wounding a child, and overwhelmed the communities of Marhanets and Nikopol’ with shells launched from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which they illegally occupy. They intensified attacks on Huliajpole, carried out personnel rotations that would otherwise be impossible without a ceasefire regime, and continued bombing all Ukrainian frontline regions, pouring more than 5,000 drones and 1,500 artillery shells into them during the third day of the so-called “truce.”
On the night of May 9, even the Latvian Armed Forces reported a possible aerial threat in airspace bordering the Russian Federation, where, in addition to flying its own drones, Moscow is attempting to direct Ukrainian ones toward NATO countries by spoofing and manipulating GNSS/GPS signals and inertial navigation parameters with other electronic warfare tools.
All of this must be recorded in the chronicles of this senseless war; especially now that those who should represent and defend the free world more than anyone else are trying to drown the facts in piles of lies, equal in number to the corpses it has produced.
Every second of silence imposed on Ukrainian weapons corresponds to a recalibration of the coordinates of Russian terror at the expense of Ukrainian civilians.
What remains of this ‘truce’ is a lesson Europe should learn: as long as Washington’s diplomatic clout continues to favor the aggressors rather than the defenders, every ceasefire will merely be the prelude to an offensive. Every “productive” phone call, a blank signature on the next massacre.
