A number of European and world leaders welcomed the ceasefire between Iran and the U.S. as they called for a “swift and lasting end to the war” within the coming days.
In a joint statement released earlier today, the leaders of Germany, France, Italy, the U.K., Denmark, Spain, the Netherlands and Canada, as well as E.U. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa, urged quick progress towards a “substantive negotiated settlement,” crucial to protect the civilian population of Iran and ensure security in the region. “It can avert a severe global energy crisis,” the statement added.
“We call upon all sides to implement the ceasefire, including in Lebanon,” it said, adding that the respective governments will contribute to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively blocked by Tehran since the start of the U.S.-Israeli assault on Iran.
