Ukrainka, Symbol of the Ukrainian Resistance
Ukrainka, Symbol of the Ukrainian Resistance

Live from Ukraine
Ukrainka – The shouts of two children playing on a slide break the surreal silence that surrounds us as we enter this settlement on the administrative border between Mykolaiv and Kherson oblasts. The craters made by drones and artillery in the grassy playground are not only remnants of past battles but also a reminder of a looming threat to which Ukrainka’s survivors of the Russkyj Mir crossing are still exposed. Alongside swings and slides scarred by shrapnel and bullets are trenches where the Ukrainian army barricaded itself in 2022 while defending the village.

Although Ukraine’s defenders stopped the Russians from settling there – then pushed them back to the banks of the Dnipro they still occupy – the Russians continue to bombard Ukrainka daily with dozens of FPV drones, harming everyone. Not even the children are safe. The Russians have destroyed all nearby businesses and homes except for a small farm and two apartment buildings reduced to ruins, home to a few workers and their families. Most are farmers who, despite the constant threat of drones and the many mines in those fields, try every day to clear a portion of land and bring it back to life, risking their lives in the process.
The latest bombs exploded moments after we interrupted the footage we shared yesterday on the YouTube channel of the Italian newspaper ”La Ragione“. They tore the crucifix from the bell tower of a ruined church where we had taken cover while the Ukrainian ППО tried to shoot down two drones aimed by the Russians at human targets. The fact that even the walls of that sacred place were riddled with bullets shows the desperate situation faced by the remaining civilians.
For various reasons, Ukrainka has effectively been a kill zone for four years, not only causing material destruction but also turning a civilian space into a place structurally hostile to life. Even after being liberated, more territories like this continue to be under a form of Russian control through fire, drones, mines, and fear. This shows that occupation can end geographically without ending its functional presence.

As we have seen in Novohryhorivka, Kyselivka, Myrne, Kopani, Posad-Pokrovske, Soldatske, and countless other reconquered settlements, liberation does not coincide with the effective restitution of civilian sovereignty. Nonetheless, all those places respond like wounded organisms still trying to breathe through those who cultivate, reclaim, and remain.
We spoke extensively with the owner of the only remaining small shop: he never left – not even during occupation – and has even taken part in sabotage activities, constantly communicating with the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Showing us his battered jacket and some smartphone photos, he shared details of his actions. The rest was confirmed by several other testimonies we collected during our prolonged stay in that kill zone. So much so that we can confidently say it would be hard to find a clearer example of partisan resistance today.

Communities like that of Ukrainka, however, are not reduced to ruins and have never been purely passive victims, not even during the darkest hours of occupation. Instead, they represent the remaining essence of living sovereignty, embodied in the active resistance of individuals like the shopkeeper who, though scarred and isolated, have managed to be the guardians of national, moral, and operational continuity during and after the occupation.
The civilizing promise with which Moscow legitimizes itself is everywhere turning into human and infrastructural desertion. If Russia exports death to assert control, Ukraine fights for permanence, reconstruction, and freedom. It is within this fierce resistance that its deepest victory is measured.

We are doing our best to provide genuine, first-hand reports from zones where almost no press dares to go. This means living constantly in a kill zone. We take the risk, but without your invaluable support, our voices would stay unheard and silent. Without brave people sharing our articles from afar, they would remain unread. Our reports would go unseen, and our efforts would be lost. There’s still a lot of work to do here, as the people around us are also in no better situation.
We’re renewing our fundraising campaign and thanking everyone who joins us in helping to restore what Russia is destroying. Moving forward with only a small reimbursement for each article from a brave newspaper that believes in us is extremely challenging. That’s why we are grateful to all the kind people who support us and trust in our mission.
Even a small donation helps.
We’ll keep you updated on developments.
Thank you all, dear friends
