Russians Are Hunting Witnesses to Their Crimes
By: Giorgio Provinciali
Live from Ukraine
Myrne – For four years, this settlement – whose name means ‘place of peace’ – has been in a gray zone. Destroyed first by artillery and then by drones, Myrne is now home to 70 residents who have chosen to return, despite constant attacks from Russian drones, to what remains of their homes. The hospital, school, and all other civilian infrastructure no longer exist. Amid kamikaze FPVs and mines dropped daily on streets, fields, and the ruins they are laboriously trying to rebuild, the civilians of Myrne are risking death to revive this ghost town.
Just yesterday, five people were hit nearby: one in Novokamianka by a drone, a couple in Bilozerka by artillery, and two police officers in the center of Kherson by live ammunition.
Also in Bilozerka, just a few minutes’ drive from Myrne, Russian drone operators scattered the grounds of the Postova Street nursery school – the only one remaining for miles – with so many leaf mines (like the ones we wrote about yesterday on these pages) that any attempt to get close was impossible.

After each of our arrivals in this area, we always had to hide because the Russians hunted us and other human prey for hours. This grim human safari, which begins with the identification of victims using balloons and spy drones, often involved the neighboring settlements of Posad-Pokrovske, Soldatske, Muzykivka, and Kyselivka. This happened with systematic ferocity until – following the advice of military and civilians – we removed the PRESS sign.
As seen in the footage we shot in each of those villages, media workers, ambulances, and more generally “observers” are the preferred targets of the remote killers hired by the Russian regime. So much so that – in an apparent paradox – it was easier to move with soldiers or alone, dressed in green, than in cars and dark civilian clothes.
Myrne has become the opposite of what its name suggests.
The remaining civilians experience the war in a gray zone that makes no distinction between front and rear. What they face is not random fire but a technologically mediated system of observation, identification, target selection, and attack that follows the logic of hunting.

Here, one is not “just” exposed to war; one is tracked within it as the Russians try to target those who rescue, testify, and reveal their crimes. The violence they carry out aims not only at physical bodies but also at the dissemination of truth. Therefore, the civilian symbols meant to protect us, in this context, become more vulnerable.
The predatory tactics enforced by the Russian occupiers have completely overturned the normal rules of war. Having lived for extended periods in these villages, we can assert that the intent to target the press, evacuees, and recognizable individuals is an attempt to turn a gray zone into a zone without witnesses.

Four years ago, artillery created a void in these territories. Spy balloons, drones, and mines have kept them uninhabitable, preventing normal life except at extreme risk. For this reason, the presence of the 70 residents who have returned to Myrne serves as a strong moral and political counterforce. It signifies opposing the tactic of terror with a simple but effective form of resistance: staying, rebuilding, and refusing to let the territory fall into emptiness.

We are doing our best to provide genuine, first-hand reports from zones where almost no press dares to go. This means living constantly in a kill zone. We take the risk, but without your invaluable support, our voices would stay unheard and silent. Without brave people sharing our articles from afar, they would remain unread. Our reports would go unseen, and our efforts would be lost. There’s still a lot of work to do here, as the people around us are also in no better situation.
We’re renewing our fundraising campaign and thanking everyone who joins us in helping to restore what Russia is destroying. Moving forward with only a small reimbursement for each article from a brave newspaper that believes in us is extremely challenging. That’s why we are grateful to all the kind people who support us and trust in our mission.
Even a small donation helps.
We’ll keep you updated on developments.
Thank you all, dear friends
