Compromised Leaders Still Ask Ukrainians For A Compromise
By: Giorgio Provinciali
Live from Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia — On February 15, 2022, then-US President Joe Biden declaredhimself «ready to negotiate written agreements» with Vladimir Putin after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met with the Russian dictator to offer «compromises» previously obtained from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The day before, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had assured that Russian troops were already partially withdrawing from the western border with Ukraine. On February 16, the Russian Ministry of Defense published images of an alleged «Russian withdrawal from Crimea», while both Zelensky and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated the opposite: «Moscow is not withdrawing, it is simply bringing troops closer, and they have increased, not decreased». On February 17, Moscow declared itself «ready to engage in serious dialogue», calling the «military scenarios» evoked by Washington «dangerous and deplorable» and rejecting as «unfounded» the accusations from the US and its European allies that it was seeking a pretext to invade Ukraine.
That intense day concluded with a speech at the UN by then-U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who was more explicit: «Moscow challenges the international order and will attack Ukraine under the false pretext of a Russian genocide in Donbas».
Exactly four years later, Vladimir Putin, through his Deputy Foreign Minister addressed the United Nations calling for its governance of Ukraine «after the completion of the special military operation» he unleashed. Washington is clearly on his side, so much so that it wants to exclude its (former) European allies from what they insist on calling «peace negotiations». The international order, as we have understood it for 80 years, no longer exists. As European Commission Vice President Kaja Kallas observed, it is precisely at the table of those alleged negotiations that Moscow achieves more than it ever did on the battlefield.
In January, the Russians occupied 245 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory. This figure is almost half that of December and January last year, and the trend is steadily declining: for comparison, last week they occupied 33 square kilometers of rubble, while the week before, 60.

Having set foot in Pokrovsk — which is 50 kilometers from where they were 12 years ago and still outside the Donbas fortress belt — Russian soldiers were ordered to kill all remaining civilians, following a pattern already seen in Bucha, Izium, Trostianets’, and other martyred cities of Ukraine. The same explicit instructions were given in Zelenyj Haj and Myrnohrad, where Moscow is even parachuting in its best units, giving them carte blanche to search every house for the Ukrainian military personnel who, along with civilians, are putting up fierce resistance.
The directive to leave no one alive has been issued from above since 2022, underscoring Moscow’s «readiness to engage in serious dialogue». This constant is repeatedly evident in the relentless targeting of the Ukrainian civilian population, which, despite the many world leaders who have come and gone over nearly five years, no one has managed to stop through so-called ‘diplomacy’.
Between Friday and Saturday, the Russian air force again bombed the town of Kramatorsk, killing four civilians. Around noon on Sunday, it struck a children’s hospital in Sumy, continuing to launch drones at half-hourly intervals against the children and medical personnel inside. On Monday, it again attacked a residential center in Kramatorsk, killing two 19-year-olds and their 8-year-old brother, who were staying with their mother and grandmother at home. It dropped a glide bomb on a house, destroying an entire family and killing a 44-year-old father and his 23-year-old son, while seriously injuring their 11-year-old brother, 16-year-old sister, and 42-year-old mother. In the Kharkiv region, another Russian attack on Monday killed two-year-old twins and their one-year-old sister, leaving their pregnant mother critically ill. Another attack destroyed the Novhorod-Siverskyj district administration building, and another struck the maternity clinic in the city from which I am reporting for this article, injuring mothers and newborns.
This is just the well-known — and certainly incomplete — list of horrors perpetrated by the Russians over the past weekend alone.
In the more than 1,450 days since, the Russian Federation has carried out approximately 2,000 documented attacks on Ukraine’s healthcare system, over 3,700 on its schools, and nearly 700 on religious institutions. It has left no energy infrastructure intact, leaving the Ukrainian population in freezing cold, without electricity, and often without water. It has illegally deported at least 19,000 minors.
Yesterday alone, here in Zaporizhzhia, the Russian occupiers launched 668 attacks on 32 inhabited settlements. In Sumy, they bombed 33. Not far from here, in Nikopol’, they flew FPV drones 10 times in search of civilian targets.

The American delegation, comprising Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Finance Minister Scott Bessent, Jared Kushner, and White House Senior Advisor Josh Groenbau, described the meeting with the Russian delegation as «productive and constructive» and «enthusiastic». Witkoff even wrote that «Russia is working to ensure peace in Ukraine».
In response to Donald Trump’s umpteenth demand for «compromises», Zelensky said Ukraine has already made many, and the biggest of all is that Putin and his associates are not in prison.
A week from now will mark the fourth anniversary of the start of a full-scale nightmare Ukraine has endured for 12 years.
As it becomes increasingly clear that those who continue to use that vile refrain are ‘compromised’, the most important intelligence sources are converging on the fact that the Russian Federation is planning a new full-scale attack on Ukraine.

The ongoing blackouts severely damaged our house’s heating system in Western Ukraine while we were in the Donbas.
Without electricity, the pump couldn’t circulate the liquid while the fire was lit. As a result, the system caught fire, and the whole house was at risk of burning. Fortunately, it did not, but the whole system needs to be changed, and the house needs to be restored. Tubes are all bent, walls are blackened by haze, and the heating system doesn’t work, requiring an entirely new system.
We are doing our best since Alla’s parents live there, but there’s still a lot to work on here, too, as the people around us are in no better situation.
We’re renewing our fundraising campaign and thanking everyone who joins us in helping us restore what Russia is destroying. Even a small donation helps. We’ll keep you updated on developments.
Thank you all, dear friends
