Donetsk Oblast’ – To show the world what life is like in Ukraine today, in the latest video we recorded for the YouTube channel of “La Ragione” last night, all we had to do was stay indoors. The interior walls were completely covered in ice and frost. The windows had ceased to separate the inside from the outside, turning into surfaces of continuous condensation. Outside, the temperature exceeded -25 degrees Celsius, and electricity, like heating, had been out for over sixteen hours.
With temperatures like these and blackouts as prolonged as the ones we’ve been experiencing for weeks, the humidity in the air turns into crystals, clinging to every cold surface. On the table, the milk left in the bowls had become a solid mass; the water in the bottles was ice. When the power finally came back on, turning on the faucets stopped the water from flowing: the filters had turned into blocks of ice, completely blocking the flow.
In these conditions, the cold ceases to be a simple climatic condition and becomes a physical force that imposes its own rules. The freezing time of a liquid is measured in minutes. Even the most banal gestures become delicate operations: without gloves, the moisture on the skin freezes instantly, creating a direct bond with metal surfaces. Gates close with difficulty, car doors seem welded to the frame. Everything resists.
Internal combustion engines struggle to start, many battery-powered electrical devices stop working, and even LEDs lose responsiveness, becoming dull, as if hesitating to turn on.
In the small houses and shelters here in Donbas, it is impossible to turn on either engine-powered generators or wood-burning stoves because of the thermal imaging cameras mounted on Russian reconnaissance drones and spy balloons. Even the smallest oversight can be fatal. Cooking is done with heating candles (spiral-wrapped cardboard in metal tins filled with paraffin) brought by volunteers. At best, you warm yourself with USB heating pads connected to power banks.
Bone soup, a little lard with bread and garlic, and sometimes preserves donated by farmers make up breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Many apartment buildings in the backwaters and in large cities aren’t connected to backup units, leaving those living there in conditions not too dissimilar from our own, except for the amount of lead falling in the Donetsk kill zone from where we write. With FPV drones, artillery fire, glide bombs, and white phosphorus or thermobaric munitions, resisting without leaving a tracn is a feat.
However, what makes this fourth winter of war even harsher since the large-scale expansion of the Russian invasion is the bitter geopolitical reality surrounding us. Donald Trump’s United States has drawn public attention to the reckless idea of ??imitating Vladimir Putin’s Russia by invading Greenland. They have torn up agreements with longtime partners, yet they are attempting to convince Ukraine to sign new ones. They have slowed – if not blocked – PURL-related deliveries and eased sanctions on Moscow.
The knowledge that the European Union’s measures will only begin to bite after two more similar winters – with member states committing to stop purchasing Russian gas only at the end of 2027, that is, after 13 years of war and violations of international law – is disheartening for military personnel and civilians alike. This is especially true given that the Kremlin has already targeted the substations of Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense special services (ГУР) announced this after devastating attacks that forced the government to declare a state of emergency in the energy sector. Due to Russian attacks and extreme cold, the situation in the country has dramatically worsened. Throughout the weekend and again yesterday, Russian aircraft savagely bombed Kharkiv, hitting power plants and causing damage Governor Oleh Sinebukhov described as «truly serious» Technicians are working tirelessly, around the clock and in horrendous conditions, but the Russian bombing continues unabated.
In Sumy, the entire city center has been left without water, heating, and electricity. Areas of Shostka are now almost cut off. In Khmelnytskyi, Russian drones struck in the direction of Starokostiantyniv, seriously threatening the nuclear power plant. Similar attacks have been recorded between the oblasts of Zhytomyr and Vinnytsia, towards Khmilnyk, as well as against Odesa and west of Dnipropetrovsk. In Zaporizhia, 802 attacks against 32 settlements have been reported, and the new head of the ГУР, Oleh Ivashchenko, has warned of imminent and even more severe strikes on the energy sector, including nuclear power.
Yet, not even a single statement has come from foreign leaders.
No missiles are arriving in Ukraine. We’ve been saying this for months, explaining how culpably naive it was to rely on the United States for projects like the PURL. The first Patriot supplies arrived only the day before yesterday, despite having been ordered almost a year earlier.
In Poland, $660,000 has been raised to buy generators for Kyiv. Many are arriving from Italy, and more will follow. The gratitude is immense, but the point isn’t to plug what Russia destroys. It’s to prevent Russia from destroying.
And as long as more money continues to flow into Moscow’s – or Washington’s – coffers than is actually intended for Ukraine, this dark spiral of ice, death, and terror won’t stop.
The continuous blackouts severely damaged the heating system of our house in Western Ukraine while we were here in Donbas.
Without electricity, the pump couldn’t circulate the liquid while the fire was lit. As a result, the system caught fire, and the whole house risked burning. Fortunately, it did not, but the whole system needs to be changed, and the house needs to be restored. Tubes are all bent, walls are blackened by haze, and the heating system doesn’t work needing to be entirely replaced.
We are doing our best since Alla’s parents live there, but there’s still a lot to work on here, too, as the people around us are in no better situation.

骨头汤、少量猪油拌面包和蒜，偶尔还有农民捐赠的罐头，构成了一日三餐。在偏远地区和大城市的许多公寓楼没有备用电源，住在那里的人境况与我们差别不大，只是我们撰写本文时所在的顿涅茨克“杀伤带”上空落下的弹片更多。面对FPV无人机、炮火、滑翔炸弹以及白磷或燃压炸药，不留下痕迹地坚持抵抗是一种壮举。
