Trump’s Double Standard On Culture and Russia’s War Against Ukrainian Identity

Zelensky, Donetsk —«Zelensky is to blame». Vladimir Putin has ordered carpet bombings of Ukraine — leaving its cities freezing, without electricity or heat, and increasingly without a stable internet connection — but according to US President Donald Trump, «Zelensky is the obstacle, because Putin wants peace».
Yesterday, a high-explosive Russian (i.e., Chinese) drone struck a children’s playground in the heart of Lviv, a European city just a few kilometers from Poland. The target? A statue of Stepan Bandera, a Ukrainian national hero and the father of the motto “слава Укра?н?!”
For someone who advocates annexing Greenland to the United States for much the same reasons Putin attacked Ukraine, the blame falls on those who refuse to surrender to the (supposedly) stronger.
So much so that the thirteenth of the 20 points of the so-called “Western Peace Plan” (i.e., the Russian one, written in prose) reiterates that Ukraine should commit to launching «educational programs in schools that promote culture and tolerance towards different cultures, eliminating racism and prejudice».
Ukraine. You read that right.
Troops indoctrinated in rashist ideology bombed a playground to bloodily cleanse Ukrainian culture and history, and the blame would fall on those who have been subjected to such attacks for 12 years.
Let’s analyze this ‘culture’, which, according to Moscow’s emissaries in Washington, should be promoted in Ukrainian schools. Starting precisely with those that the Russian Federation bombed or damaged between February 2022 and December 2025: 1,844, one in seven. Some 229 secondary schools were completely destroyed.
Many of our nearly 200 video reports were recorded from precisely those places protected by international law that Russia is razing, occupying, or polluting. In Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and many other Ukrainian oblasts, children are forced to study in underground schools and now even in kindergartens, as are university students. In the Ukrainian territories illegally occupied by Moscow, textbooks and Ukrainian literature have been removed or destroyed. The Ukrainian language has been banned from instruction. Russian school programs have been imposed, promoting a Russian narrative that denies the very existence of the Ukrainian nation. Ukrainian intellectuals, teachers, and librarians have been illegally detained, deported, killed, or forced to flee.
Alongside the persecution of culture, the Russian regime dropped bombs: despite the two “ДЕТИ” (CHILDREN, in Russian) slogans standing out in large letters on the patios in front of and behind that building, Moscow’s air force bombed and destroyed the Mariupol Drama Theater, killing 300 defenseless civilians. Systematically violating the 1954 Hague Convention, Russia bombed and looted hundreds of Ukrainian museums, libraries, archives, and autocephalous churches, including the UNESCO-protected Transfiguration Cathedral in Odesa. As documented by that organizationand the OSCE, this was not collateral damage but a strategy of symbolic annihilation of Ukrainian identity.
The Russian regime used the churches it did not destroy as vectors for espionage and disinformation. Ukrainian Orthodox Church facilities under the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate (УПЦ) have been exploited to gather military intelligence or to serve as logistical and communication channels with the occupying authorities, as we documented from the field a month ago. Moscow has used faith to delegitimize the Ukrainian state in sermons, justify its invasion, and even hand out Hero of Russia medals and other awards to its undercover agents and traitors. The Pope of the Russian Orthodox Church (a former KGB agent) even blessed the Russian army for killing Ukrainians, promoting genocide.
This is especially notable given that the УПЦ continues its activities despite Ukraine’s adoption of Law №8371, which, starting September 2024, bansreligious organizations affiliated with the Russian Orthodox Church. This is because — unlike Russia — Ukraine is governed by the rule of law, and, legally, this ban applies to individual entities, not to the denomination as a whole, requiring proof of a connection to the aggressor state in each case.
As we have observed, abbesses and archimandrites of those dioceses often refuse to acknowledge Russian aggression against Ukraine or even to answer simple questions, such as who, in their opinion, owns Crimea.
Just a week ago, a clandestine school was discovered in Kyiv, located in a УПЦ monastery, where students were ‘educated’ using textbooks from the former USSR and learned Russian in classes devoted to a subject called “Slavic language”. In the basement of the Goloseevskaya Pustyn Monastery (Holoseevsky District), elementary school children were shown films and taught Russian-language songs and arithmetic based on Soviet publications from 1966.
Therefore, Ukraine is acting fully in accordance with international law, while the practices of the Russian Federation fall within the definition of cultural genocide, as has already been recognized by historical precedents (Lemkin, 1944; Council of Europe, 2023).
What culture, then, does Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Donald Trump, want to promote or export?
