Kyiv Evacuated Amid a Rain of Russian Fire While Westerners Keep Talking About ‘Peace’

By: Giorgio Provinciali

Live from Ukraine

Novopavlivka – Russia’s response to months of diplomatic efforts by Western governments to resolve the war Moscow unleashed against Ukraine came just hours after the final handshakes at the Paris meetingA carpet bombing across Ukraine, of an intensity and barbarity unmatched in recent comparisons for its ferocity against civilians, included the launch of another Oreshnik ballistic missile (the first was launched on November 21, 2024, against Dnipro).

Officially, the Russian Ministry of Defense declared that «it was a response to the Ukrainian attack (which never occurred, ed.) on Putin’s residence.» In essence, it was the Kremlin’s response to those who, for months, deluded themselves – at the expense of the Ukrainians – that it was possible to get the Russian Federation to sit at the same table as the democracies.

Nineteen buildings in Kyiv (including the one housing the Qatari embassy) were damaged by an inhuman firestorm that left 25 people injured and 4 dead. Kindergartens, tram depots, supermarkets, gas stations, and cars were mercilessly devastated by Russian fire, prompting the capital’s mayor, Vitaly Klitschko, to issue a statement for the first time since the war began, «urging the population to temporarily leave the city due to bombings that have left half of Kyiv’s residential buildings, nearly 6,000, without heating». Pechersk and the left bank of the Dnipro River in the capital were left without water. In Darnytsia, Russian strikes also killed a doctor in an ambulance. Between Boryspil and Brovary, 370,000 families are without power. With disruptions caused by the bad weather, the number of households disconnected from the electricity system in the Kyiv region reaches half a million.

In Lviv, hit by the Oreshnik, gas supplies were cut off to 376 users due to a Russian missile attack on the village of Rudno. Due to Russian bombing, over a million people were left without heating or water in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast’ alone, and the head of its regional council, Mykola Lukashuk, admitted that there are no plans for power restoration. «If you have water at home right now, stock up on it. Especially in the Pavlohrad and Synelnykove districts, because the DZD utility has been left without electricity» – Lukashuk wrote, slightly anticipating the introduction of further power cuts by DTek as well.

Repair work in those two cities is hampered by constant alarms and threats of attack: just watch the videos Alla Perdei and I recorded for this newspaper’s YouTube channel to understand the conditions in which both Synelnykove and Pavlohrad are currently located.

Kryvyi Rih suffered the worst combined attack since the war began. Rescue workers, electrical engineers, heating technicians, and firefighters worked through the night in a snowstorm to restore public services after Russian aircraft swept through the city on Thursday evening, killing around thirty people. Nearly 30,000 households have been disconnected from power lines, and water is available only in the southern neighborhoods, thanks to generators. Over 30 thermal power plants have been deactivated, reactivated, and then disconnected again due to power surges that are causing hydraulic shocks from sudden overpressures. Hospitals are running on generators, and kindergartens and schools are operating exclusively online.

In Kherson, around midnight yesterday, Russian occupiers bombed the village of Tekstilne from the opposite bank of the Dnipro, killing two children and their mother.

In total, Russia’s response to the alleged and unworkable Western ‘peace plan’ consisted of launching 242 drones and 36 other missiles of various types, including the feared Oreshnik, a medium-range ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads and traveling at speeds exceeding Mach-10, launched from the Kapustin Yar test range in Russia’s Astrakhan region. As Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha emphasized when announcing the urgent convocation of the United Nations Security Council, the Russians intentionally launched it a handful of kilometers from the Euro-Atlantic alliance to send a signal.

However, Washington’s response is equally clear.

Donald Trump, who before being re-elected president of the United States of America had publicly proclaimed on at least 83 occasions that he could end the conflict within 24 hours, declared yesterday on Fox News that he «will not set deadlines for resolving the conflict in Ukraine». In that same interview, he stated his support for the bipartisan bill aimed at tightening sanctions on Russia, although he also specified that he hoped they wouldn’t have to be implemented because «although the Russian economy is in dire straits, the Russian Federation is a much larger and more powerful country than Ukraine». It’s important to remember that, in fact, his administration has long since begun easing the sanctions on Moscow.

If the West doesn’t stop pandering to that rhetoric and seriously resume military support for Ukraine, things will only get worse. From the front I’m writing from, I haven’t even been able to get close to Dobropillia. Kyiv wasn’t evacuated even when it was besieged in 2022. While civilians flee from devastated, dark, and freezing Ukrainian cities, the military waits for supplies that never arrive because Washington is slowing everything passing through the PURL, and Europe has eased its direct support for Ukraine.

Trump has just signed a memorandum for the US withdrawal from 66 organizations and treaties «that no longer serve America’s interests» and threatens to terminate those signed with NATO as well. Thinking that signing new ones is the solution is political and military suicide.
