Blood On the Snow, And On The Horizon

By: Giorgio Provinciali

Pavlohrad – For five days, the civilian population of Vyshhorod, a satellite city of Kyiv, has been without water or heating. As I write this article, I continue to receive messages from friends and acquaintances desperate for help amid isolation and freezing temperatures (in some parts of Ukraine, the mercury has dropped more than 20 degrees below zero), while the Russian Federation continues to target Ukraine’s energy sector. Two violent Russian attacks have caused identical blackouts in Nizhyn and Chernihiv, forcing the national carrier Ukrzalisnytsia to temporarily limit rail traffic.

Mandatory evacuations have been imposed in 14 border villages in that region to avoid repeating the mistake in Hrabivske, where civilians refusedevery invitation to evacuate and were later held hostage by the Russians after having overexposed and restricted Ukrainian military personnel stationed in those border areas of Sumy oblast’.

As in Vyshhorod, the main problem is that most essential services depend on electricity, and the Russians continue to bomb those power plants daily. For these reasons, local authorities are seeking alternative methods to ensure heating and water supplies for residents of urban areas far from the front, while having no options other than evacuating areas the Russians are bombarding with FPV drones and mortar fire. Due to the bombing, as many as 470 residential buildings connected to the Kherson thermal power plant have been cut off.

Despite Vladimir Putin’s cynical statements – including telling Donald Trump that he wants to see Ukraine «win» and is ready to help it by providing low-cost Russian electricity – the Russians continue to target Ukrainian thermal power plants, making it impossible for technicians to repair them.

In case the Western world has forgotten, this is what Братская помощь (Russian: ‘fraternal aid’) is all about. Destroy, repress, leave to the cold, and starve to the point of breaking even the most resilient will, only to then lead people to beg for help from the same hand that killed, plundered, and annihilated.

With that term, Moscow justified direct military interventions in the Warsaw Pact countries during the Soviet era, as in Budapest in 1956 and Prague in 1968.

It should be remembered.

Especially to Italians, since the Conte government agreed in 2020 to send dubious Russian medical teams and supplies to Italian soil as part of an operation that Moscow called precisely that: «fraternal aid», guaranteeing them access to Italian healthcare and IT infrastructure.

Aanother Ukrainian civilian infrastructure destroyed by the russian federation

The Kherson example is emblematic: on December 3rd, the Russian Armed Forces carried out a carpet bombing of the city’s largest thermal power plant. Three days later, they fired another hundred heavy artillery shells at the same facility, and on December 17th, they again bombarded it with drones and other missiles, also targeting Ukrainian rapid-response and rescue teams. Naftogaz offered stoves and alternative heating methods, and the Russians targeted those as well, even though they were providing humanitarian aid.

Through their spokesman in Washington, Donald Trump, top Russian officials have made it known that Moscow is willing to «help» the very Ukrainians from whom it has deprived everything, including humanitarian aid.

Although 45 settlements along the Kherson coast remain cold and freezing, the residents’ determination has remained undiminished, prompting top Ukrainian technicians to develop alternative solutions, the details of which have not been disclosed for security reasons.

Despite Donald Trump’s continued assertion of faith in the good intentions of this century’s worst dictator, the Russians have continued to launch devastating attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.

A total of 608 attacks targeted 25 settlements in Zaporizhia alone. Further east, they have overwhelmed the Dnipropetrovsk region, including the Nikopol’ and Pavlohrad areas, where I am writing. The blood of Ukrainian civilians now permeates the snow in so many villages along the road to Pokrovsk that further comment is superfluous. In Sumy Oblast’, the Russians even attacked a car carrying bread. In Odesa, two civilian ships, “Emmakris III” and “Captain Karam”, were hit as they entered the port to load grain.

This scenario is reflected in the statements of European leaders who, after yet another round of ‘consultations’, claimed yesterday that «peace is on the horizon».

It’s unclear what horizon they’re looking at, given that the Baltic states are preparing to blow up the bridges on the border with Russia and Belarus.

Giorgio Provinciali)
