No Military Targets, Only The Intent To Kill

Donetsk Oblast’ – Russian bombing of Ukraine continued throughout the night and into Christmas Day. «No military targets, only the intent to kill» reiterated Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha. The Russian Federation is deliberately destroying Ukraine’s energy and civilian infrastructure, leaving people without electricity, water, and heating. Temperatures dropped to -20°C last night, and traveling in these conditions poses serious challenges, even to reach the nearest resilience point for a hot drink, a smartphone charge, and possibly an internet connection.
Ten Ukrainian civilians were thus victims of a Russian attack on the center of Chernihiv on Christmas Day. A Russian drone struck the residential building where they were staying, while other drones targeted civilians desperately seeking shelter during the raid. Also on Christmas Day, on the opposite bank of the Dnipro River, Russian occupiers bombed Kherson’s central market, just as it was most crowded with civilians. The barbaric and cynical attack cost the life of a 47-year-old worker, torn to pieces while setting up his stall.
Here in Donetsk, more precisely in Kostiantynivka and Myrnohrad, the Russian Armed Forces are on a macabre safari among Ukrainian civilians. They shoot at anything that moves, including children and the elderly. In Kherson alone, since the beginning of the year, they have killed 293 people and injured nearly 2,500, including 200 children. On that side of the country, they claim a civilian victim almost every day, continuing to hunt prey of all ages, even in basements. About 4,000 residents remain in Kostiantynivka. They live on the front lines. Three hundred people were evacuated last week, but even there, Russian drones are killing one Ukrainian civilian a day. After miraculously escaping an attack by one of those kamikaze quadcopters ourselves, Alla Perdei and I recorded nearly identical statistics in Marhanets and nearby Nikopol.
Unable to make any headway in Pokrovsk, the Russian Armed Forces are trying to break through in both Kostiantynivka and Myrnohrad, continuously launching small infantry units. Day and night, without respite. One unit dies; the next follows.
The artillery doesn’t stop even during snowstorms, and even at temperatures below zero, the drones’ buzzing keeps us feeling like prey. The Russians are using the full range of UAVs at their disposal to reach Ukrainian rear areas, up to 150 kilometers from the front lines. A Geran’ drone exploded just minutes before Alla and I passed through Mykhailivka, while upon our arrival in the Dobropillia area, several FPVs attacked in swarms, hitting a truck loaded with humanitarian aid. In these devastated areas of Donetsk, 12,642 children remain. 383 live in the two villages closest to the front lines. In the hell of Pokrovsk, approximately 1,250 civilians remain. None of them were evacuated during the Christmas week.
As President Zelensky emphasized, «there have been correlations between the Chinese satellite images of Ukrainian territory and Russian attacks on specific targets in the energy industry». The ports of Odesa have been subjected to relentless attacks, damaging silos, warehouses, civilian businesses, and barges, including two vessels flying the Slovak and Liberian flags. The Russians are sparing no effort.
Adding to the uneasiness and sense of oppression among the civilian population and the despair – not to mention anger – among the military is the so-called ‘peace plan’ presented by Zelensky in the past few hours as the fruit of Ukrainian diplomacy. «An unreadable piece of rubbish» – according to the soldiers of the 95th Brigade with me at the front. This opinion is widely held by Ukrainian political scientists and analysts with whom I have been in contact in the past few hours. In common opinion, the 28 points presented by the American emissaries – that is, written by the Russians – shouldn’t even have been put into prose in the 20 that Zelensky intends to discuss with Trump at Mar-a-Lago. «A farce the Russians won’t accept» – according to journalist Ilia Ponomarenko. «A despicable charade that we shouldn’t even have proposed, because it offends our sacrifice and our people» – according to the young men at the front.
Rather than a success for Ukrainian diplomacy, the 20 ‘rewritten’ points are an insult to the valiant resistance of the Ukrainian people, who, all things considered, will reject them when they are called to vote.
From this perspective, the shock caused in Ukraine by the ‘20-point peace’ is even worse than that caused by the bombings.
