Sumy Residents Taken Hostage by Russians and Deported

By: Giorgio Provinciali

Khotyn — The small village of Hrabivske is located in the easternmost part of the Sumy region, on the border between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. It is so close to the state border that its 52 residents continued to fish in the lakes and streams that, in effect, constitute the natural barrier separating the two countries even after 2022. Throughout that period, none of them agreed to evacuate, thereby hindering the Ukrainian military, whose counter-battery fire was intended to keep Russian breakthrough attempts in the Belgorod region at bay. This task was made increasingly impossible by the fact that men of conscription age, women, and children continued to remain there despite the Russians firing on them. Repeated and unsuccessful evacuation attempts by state officials and law enforcement officers dragged on for months and years, until the Ukrainian military had no choice but to overexpose themselves by taking up positions among the people themselves.

Last Thursday, about a hundred Russian attackers and raiders stormed the village, taking all 52 civilians and 13 Ukrainian soldiers hostage. «Since the village is small, it didn’t take long. In a couple of hours, the Russians rounded them all up in the local church and then, on the evening of December 20, deported them to the Russian Federation. From then on, they had free rein to settle» – explained Viktor Trehubov, head of the communications department of the Ukrainian Joint Forces Group.

The Russian Armed Forces intend to create an infiltration zone at least a kilometer deep around the village. This is not a large-scale breakthrough attempt—as reported by Russian and much of the Italian media—but a diversion aimed at distracting the Ukrainian army from deploying resources to other fronts where the Russians are not only failing to advance but are being pushed back.

Following the successful counteroffensive operations that liberated Kupiansk from enemy forces, Ukrainian forces are also advancing against Russian forces in the Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad area.

Yesterday alone, the Russian Armed Forces attempted to break through on that front 58 times, losing 174 men, 132 of them irreparably. The Ukrainian forces have repelled every breakthrough attempt, even managing to organize alternative logistical routes to ensure uninterrupted supplies and the timely evacuation of their contingent in the Pokrovsk district.

In Myrnograd, Rodynske, Pokrovsk, Rivne, Kotlyne, Udachne, Molodetske, Pershe Travnya, and Filiya, as well as toward Sukhetske, Hryshyn, Novopidhorodne, and Novopavlivka, the Armed Forces of Ukraine managed to crush Russian assault attempts by destroying numerous vehicles and shelters. Yesterday alone, eight of them, filled with enemy personnel, as well as a tank and eight other armored vehicles, plus a large number of ATVs and motorcycles.

If the civilians of Hrabivske had accepted the evacuation in due time, the Russians would have had a hard time there today, too, because the ЗСУ could have easily struck them from the rear. This was not done to prevent a massacre of innocents. After visiting the atrocities in Yahidne that the rashist butchers were capable of committing (who kidnapped the local population in similar ways, locking them up in a gulag where they perpetrated unspeakable abominations), all that remains is to hope that the Ukrainian counteroffensive will be swift.

Giorgio Provinciali
