1. EU is in the motion of indefinitely freezing russia asset, and using it to fund ukraine war.
2. Why Russia is suing EU in Moscow as a counter move?
a. Russia has C-account, which hold and Freeze EU companies and individuals' financial assets, since EU froze Russia central bank asset after the eruption of the war. The total amount may be several hundred billion in terms of us dollar;
b. EU companies and individuals also has FDI in russia, which could worth another several hundered billion dollars.
Russia is suing EU in moscow. If the court rules that EU's action is illegal, russia will seize those asset as a retaliation to EU's current move. in short, russia is seek to get compensation in the case that EU finalize current move.
3. Therefore, end of the day, even if EU follow throught its currrent move, it is some EU's companies and individuals that are indirectly paying the cost of funding Ukraine war.-----Russia will confiscate their assets in Russia. We can imagine that those stake holders are launching a furious lobbying against those move. howver, EU politican could choose to ignore their companies and people's economic interests and go down the path they just laid out.
4. Their currrent decision is that they will indefinitely freeze russia asset until russia has paid the repatriation. But, who knows, in the future peace agreement, where maybe no "repatriation". in that case, EU will have to repay the asset to Russia. At least this is a risk, EU leaders has to weights, unless they are truely irational.
5. EU's move could be deemed by many as ilegal move. I even think that US could deem it as illegal. therefore, in future, if Russia suit EU in many countries, including in US, there is some likehood that EU's move will be ruled as ilegal. The EU will have to pay back.
In short, EU's move is a high risk move.
