Still Alive After Yet Another FPV Drone Attack
Still Alive After Yet Another FPV Drone Attack

Khotyn — The worst is over. The car we were traveling in in the Druzhkivka sector of Donetsk Oblast’ was severely damaged, so much so that it was unusable for a long time. Coming face-to-face with an FPV drone is like staring death in the face. No matter how much you try to avoid it, if it has you in its sights, it’s almost like playing Russian roulette with the gun almost fully loaded. A reflex, perhaps influenced by the subversive maneuvers learned from spending so much time with the guys at the front, caused our press car to veer off the road on its own, while we both managed to escape.

The car repairs took longer than expected, testing my skills as an engineer under pressure. The incident happened on November 7th, and the car was fully functional only yesterday, December 3rd. Alla Perdei she was once again exceptionally good at keeping her cool and helping with little or nothing. We’ve been very lucky considering that two other journalists with their press cars were shot dead by a Russian drone nearby in Kramatorsk, and two more were targeted by an FPV drone in nearby Kostiantynivka.

Anti-drone systems are now less effective because fiber-optic drones can evade almost all jamming systems, while so-called detectors still lack the accuracy needed to scan the sky and detect their presence. Radio-frequency drones can be intercepted, and specialized devices designed to disable them can even show live on a monitor what their digital eye is currently seeing. But against a fiber-optic drone, the challenge is greater. Active countermeasures are required: anti-drone drones, light machine guns, shotguns with scattergun ammunition, or new automatic targeting systems based on artificial vision. Among those on the front lines, some have shot down more than one with these devices, because fiber optics protect data transmission from interference but do not shield the drone’s shell from kinetic weapons.
Physical barriers still exist, designed to make FPV drones fly close to obstacles that can cause them to become “blind” due to sudden tension or violent vibrations. The access ramparts and anti-drone corridors where we’ve recorded all our latest reports are specifically designed with bottlenecks, blind spots, and vertical barriers such as canopies.
Following the example set by the Ukrainians in 2022, the Russians are deploying fire-breathing drones capable of dropping napalm on nylon anti-drone nets, which eventually disintegrate, leaving large gaps. Until recently, almost all drones were visually piloted by an operator, but now they can autonomously eliminate their targets once the coordinates are set and the algorithm controlling their onboard sensors has been trained.

Flashes, smoke, and IR/thermal systems that break up the contrast or limit direct visibility can therefore have a relatively limited impact on these unmanned devices, except in cases of thick, diffuse fog. Thus, the Russians have managed to advance into the Zaporizhia Oblast’ and, in the past few hours, towards the central sector of Pokrovsk. Ukraine did not have sufficient artillery and counter-battery fire to cover those areas, and they have moved on as we ourselves have done several times, joining convoys precisely at the moments when that death-reeling mist had swallowed everything.

However, it is precisely then that the Russian air force carpet-bombs cities like the one we escaped from.
It happened yesterday in Sloviansk, hit by nine KAB glide bombs that caused an unknown number of casualties, including at least two children. It occurred in the community of Mezhivska, in Dnipropetrovsk, when a high-tonnage glide bomb struck and destroyed the school where 450 children were studying. This was the sad ending of the central market in nearby Kramatorsk, which was hit twice around five in the evening the day before yesterday. It is the daily reality of Druzhkivka, so much so that spending a night there and escaping unscathed is a truly rare achievement.
A few nights ago, the explosions were so loud and so close that they made our hearts tremble in our chests, so much so that we felt sensations similar to extrasystoles. Isolated, without light, heat, or internet access, one of those nights we decided to remove all our protective gear because it would only prolong our suffering if we were hit. It’s horrifying to feel like prey, especially after over a thousand days and nights of witnessing and documenting, as clearly as possible, the effects of this horror.
