The White of Surrender, and The Black of Infamy

WE JUST LAUNCHED A NEW FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN TO PURCHASE DRONE DETECTORS

Kamianske — To tighten their grip on Kupiansk by cutting off its supplies along the main road that runs along and then crosses the Oskil River, Russian forces destroyed and then invaded the peaceful Ukrainian village of Kruhliakivka. Fearing they would be trapped in the pocket that the Russians are attempting to close to the north by pushing toward that canal, seeing the bridge that linked them to the west with Senkove (and the rest of the Ukrainian territories already liberated by the ZSU) demolished, and with nothing to the east but the areas of Luhansk already occupied by the Russian army, two unarmed civilians desperately set off south on Sunday.

They carried in a white bag and a backpack the few belongings they had managed to scavenge from their looted homes. The younger of the two advanced slowly in jeans, clutching a pole on which a white flag fluttered. With his other hand, he held the leash of his dog. Also in civilian clothes, an elderly man followed him, steadying his pace with his cane. Seeing a quadcopter drone approaching a couple of meters above the ground, the first of the two men let the pole slide so that the white flag enveloped him, clearly signaling his non-combatant status. The drone operator slowed it down enough to hover briefly above his prey, then accelerated it, causing it to explode on top of him. Seeing the young man torn to pieces and his dog dying, the old man dropped his cane and bag to the ground, stopped his weary pace, and, staring at a second drone approaching and circling in front of him in the same manner, made the sign of the cross. Whoever was remotely piloting the aircraft didn’t even give him time to finish that gesture and blew it up. A third drone recorded the entire scene, focusing its digital eye on the remains of the two men and the dog, even after other looters had stolen their remains, rummaged through their backpacks and clothes, and taken off their shoes. There were no military structures or positions nearby. The perpetrators of that outrage later posted it on Russian social media channels, peppering it with rashist propaganda aimed at discrediting Ukraine and its Armed Forces.

Two weeks earlier, the Ukrainian Defense Forces released intercepted radio communications between Russian soldiers in the Kupiansk area, where an order was given to shoot an unarmed civilian. The next day, a Russian sabotage and reconnaissance group (DRG) entered the center of Pokrovsk, killing several Ukrainian civilians near the train station. This was reported by the 7th Rapid Reaction Corps of the Ukrainian Airborne Assault Forces, which in recent hours released a video of the massacre of Kruhliakivka fugitives. Another intercepted conversation between Russian soldiers, obtained by Ukrainian Ministry of Defense intelligence, reveals the brutality with which they routinely suppress their own comrades trying to escape the battlefield—mutilating or breaking their limbs.

On August 25, the Russian Federation began the process of withdrawingfrom the European Convention on the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. As the OSCE noted, about 90% of Ukrainian prisoners of war were tortured by the Russians. I personally observed this constant during the many testimonies we recorded with veterans reduced to debilitated states, along with Alla Perdei. Just a few hours ago, in Nikopol’, a Russian drone struck an ambulance carrying a patient to the hospital with sirens blaring, along with medical personnel. In those same locations, while we were filming a clip for the Italian newspaper “La Ragione” a few months ago, Alla and I were targeted by a Russian FPV drone. After circling above us, it exploded just meters from our press car.

The vehicle was clearly marked from all sides, just as we were, with the word “PRESS” large on our black bulletproof vests. It was a harrowing experience similar to the one we had when we narrowly escaped an attack by Russian DRG forces in the Sumy region. We were escorted by the highest local civil authority and were protected in accordance with international conventions. However, that insignia, like a red cross on a white background, a white flag, a gesture of surrender or faith such as making the sign of the cross, or the clasped hands of kneeling children—whom the Russians opened fire on less than a month ago—are meaningless to those who not only ignore those rules but disown them.

Through our crowdfunding campaign, we aim to purchase and install drone detection devices on each of our vehicles to protect against drone attacks in hot zones. Anti-drone «РЕБ» devices have proven effective against traditional wireless drones but are completely ineffective against those connected via fiber-optic cables. We are launching this new campaign to ensure that none of those devices will hit us when we approach the frontlines where we write our articles. Your support will not only protect us but also the civilians and defenders within the device’s range.
