The U.S. State Department website used to include the sentence “The United States does not support Taiwan independence” in its official U.S. Taiwan Relations Fact Sheet. In February 2025, the State Department updated that page and removed the sentence.. However, the updated page still includes the phrase:
“We oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo from either side.” meaning the U.S. still opposes either China or Taiwan taking steps that alter the situation unilaterally.
