圣经》中《马太福音》26章52节的一句话，和这句话的意思很接近
“耶稣对他说：‘收刀入鞘吧！凡动刀的，必死在刀下。’”
英文（NIV版本）为： “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.”
圣经中确实有类似“玩火者必自焚”的经文，最接近的是《箴言》6章27-28节，原文（和合本）为：
“人若怀里搋火，衣服岂能不烧呢？人若在火炭上走，脚岂能不烫呢？”
这节经文用火作为比喻，警示人们不要冒险从事危险行为（如通奸），否则必然自食恶果，类似于玩火自焚的含义。
另外，《以赛亚书》50章11节也有类似意涵：“凡你们点火，用火把围绕自己的，可以行在你们的火焰里，并你们所点的火把中。这是我手所定的，你们必躺在悲惨之中。” 这描述了点火的人最终会因自己的火而受苦。
