Chornobyl – Just hours after Ukrainian intelligence officially confirmed the identity of the Russian general who, on the night of June 5 – 6, 2023, directly coordinated the operation to blow up the Nova Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant (namely the Chief of the General Staff and Deputy First Commander of the «Dnipro» Group, Vladimir Omelyanovich), and on the ninth day of a power outage at the Enerhodar nuclear power plant they are holding hostage in Zaporizhia, Moscow’s armed forces deliberately struck again by cutting off power to the Chornobyl nuclear plant.
By bombing the Slavutych substation it is connected to, the Russians caused a surge that left its most important part, the safe confinement unit, in blackout. This isolates the fourth power block that exploded in 1986, preventing the release of radioactive materials into the environment.
«The Russians knew that an attack on the Slavutych facilities would have had serious consequences for Chornobyl. It was a targeted assault in which they used more than 20 drones. Some were shot down, but the attack was deliberately organized as a wave to make defending the plant more difficult» – President Zelensky reported during a blackout that lasted nearly three hours.
At the time of writing, radiation levels in the Chornobyl district do not exceed those set by the IAEA, but due to this attack, nearly 20,000 residents of Slavutych are without power. Critical facilities such as hospitals, schools, stores, pharmacies, banks, and gas stations are running on emergency generators. Water supplies to the city are only consistently available in the evening, and telephone technicians are working with mobile providers to restore communications, but the situation remains extremely tense.
Despite narrowly avoiding catastrophe, Russian aircraft continued to bomb Ukrainian energy infrastructure in Kyiv, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions, ultimately leaving 307,000 consumers without power across various areas in those regions.
Semenivka, Koriukivka, Novhorod-Siverskyi, and Ripky, in particular, remain isolated. All trolleybus lines except n°11 are out of service, and the water utility cannot pump enough water to reach the upper floors of buildings.
In several other areas, strict power outage schedules have been introduced, using electricity generated by other power plants. Three hours on and six off, split into four shifts starting at 8:00 PM, were the only possible solution, since simultaneously supplying all users remains impossible.
Distance learning, the restoration of neslamnosti punktiv (the «resilience points» powered by autonomous generators where people can heat and connect to the internet), street lighting turned off, and increased police patrols were the first measures introduced in the most affected areas, but the entire country is in an emergency.
The areas of Konotop and Shostka are unreachable, cut off from power and under constant bombardment. The Russians barbarously targeted a five-story building in Balakliia, from which we connected via video with the Italian newspaper “La Ragione” just a few hours ago, killing a 70-year-old woman and wounding four others, aged 79, 78, 35, and 60. A blind and senseless fury, because burning elderly women alive in their apartments and destroying civilian cars has no military value.
Yet terrorists in Putin’s pay are pressing where the danger is greatest. Catastrophic. As the IAEA confirmed, the situation at the Enerhodar nuclear power plant – now in its tenth day of emergency power – is unstable. Sufficient diesel fuel reserves remain to cool the six reactors for another nine days.
The head of the State Nuclear Regulator, Oleh Korikov, explained that the situation could escalate into a serious accident.
The plant has remained a strategic hostage in Russian hands for three years. A potential catastrophe generator with which to blackmail the West. After damaging the 750-kV power line that powered it, rather than repairing it, the Russians are attempting to open a new assault line in Zaporizhzhia.
