Live from Ukraine

Sumy – All checkpoints for entering and exiting the oblast’ we’re writing from are staffed by personnel from the СБУ, Ukraine’s special services. While ЗСУ soldiers remain present, the agents managing access and determining who can pass through the barriers are now wearing balaclavas and are in contact with the central intelligence headquarters in Kyiv.

This measure allows for more direct and coordinated control over both the incoming flow and the outgoing movement, enabling the tracking of suspicious activities, especially now that evacuation has been ordered in many villages, while at least a dozen others are known to be under Russian control. The permanent and widespread presence of the СБУ – which also guards all the internal checkpoints of this oblast’ – also makes it easier to track down infiltrators, saboteurs and Russian spies, which represent a problem of no minor importance in a context of incessant and precise attacks such as those that have been plaguing Sumy for months now. Beyond the increasingly frequent ambushes by Russian ДРГ raiders – which we have miraculously survived – it is pretty clear that Moscow has managed to introduce into Ukraine a dense network of informants who take photographs, send coordinates, record movements, and in turn engage other pawns who are more or less aware of their role.

To this end, Kremlin agents have reportedly gone so far as to recruit young Ukrainian suicide bombers through social networks, offering small sums of money to minors in exchange for carrying out seemingly ordinary tasks, such as delivering a package.

The fear that the enemy could intercept signals, listen to speeches, record the movement of vehicles, or detect the presence of troops has led the Ukrainians to remove many infrared cameras they had installed to monitor traffic on the road network in Sumy. During our recent travels to the border areas, we noticed that many devices had been positioned facing the ground or turned towards blind corners. This was likely done to prevent Russian hackers from picking up their signals. Furthermore, the webcams with public IP addresses have been inactive for the past three years.

In the context of extreme espionage, the recent attacks by the Russian Federation on Ukraine are significant. These include the strike on the Chernivtsi railway station, which was followed by a larger-scale attack intended to disrupt the Carpathian railway network. Additionally, there have been two recent attacks on Ternopil’, a strike on Zhytomyr last week, and two serious attacks that occurred over the weekend in Zaporizhzhia and Poltava.

On Saturday, three Shahed drones precisely struck a humanitarian aid depot in Zaporizhzhia, causing an estimated three million euros in damagesThis attack has severely impacted internally displaced persons in the country, depriving them of crucial assistance that the Beluga UA team has been providing at that hub since the war began.

On Sunday, a joint missile and drone attack severely damaged the energy and agricultural infrastructure of Kremenchuk, causing significant harm to power lines throughout the Poltava region.

In a recent intervention aimed at urging Kyiv’s partners to impose truly stringent sanctions on the Russian terrorist regime, President Volodymyr Zelenskyj of Ukraine has announced that all the country’s intelligence agencies (including the СБУ and the ГУР) have significant data proving that the Russian Federation is planning further missile attacks against Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

Take a walk around Sumy to witness the disastrous results of the Kremlin’s secret activities aimed at gathering information for launching targeted and devastating attacks as described.

In the video reports we recorded for the website and YouTube channel of the Italian newspaper “La Ragione,” we captured the smoking wreckage of what were once thriving food companies – places where bread was baked, fish was processed, and food was canned.

Despite the weak response from the international community, nearly a century after the genocide of the Holodomor, Moscow continues to target Kyiv’s resilience, aiming to reduce Ukrainians to hunger, darkness, and cold. The explosions, which resonate through the air even in the center of Sumy, barely a few kilometers away, force us to deliver this article early as we seek shelter.

These events do not signal better times ahead.
