U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a "very productive" phone call on Friday, discussing trade, fentanyl, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the TikTok deal.

Trump announced on Truth Social that the two leaders made progress on several important issues and agreed to meet at the upcoming APEC Summit in South Korea. They also planned additional high-level visits, with Trump visiting China in early 2026 and Xi coming to the United States "at an appropriate time."

According to China’s Xinhua News Agency, Xi asked Trump to avoid implementing restrictive trade measures during the call. The Chinese leader also expressed that his government respects the wishes of businesses regarding the TikTok deal and hopes companies can find a resolution.

The conversation marked the first direct communication between the leaders since June. The call followed earlier negotiations between U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Madrid, which established a framework agreement for spinning off ByteDance’s U.S. TikTok operations.

 

Trump specifically mentioned his appreciation for "the TikTok approval" in his social media post, having previously stated he expected to reach an agreement on the future of the popular video-sharing app.

Beyond TikTok, the two countries continue to navigate tensions over semiconductor export controls, with the U.S. recently adding 32 companies to its entity list in early September, prompting China to launch investigations into American-made chips. 

The leaders’ discussion also addressed ongoing concerns about China’s economic ties with Russia during the Ukraine war, and issues related to precursor chemicals used in fentanyl production.

"The call was a very good one, we will be speaking again by phone, appreciate the TikTok approval, and both look forward to meeting at APEC!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.
