Reports indicate that Qatar purchased missile systems, but not radar systems, from China. In 2017, Qatar showcased Chinese-made SY-400 short-range ballistic missiles, which were a shock to its neighbors. Military analysts state that a radar system was not part of this particular deal, and Qatar primarily relies on Western companies for its high-tech defense needs. 

 

Qatar has purchased radar systems from other international defense companies, most notably from the U.S. and Italy:
  • United States: In 2017, Qatar awarded a $1 billion contract to the American company Raytheon for an Early Warning Radar (EWR) system. In 2025, it was announced that Qatar is buying a $1 billion counter-drone system from Raytheon that includes radar technology.
  • Italy: In 2015, Qatar contracted the Italian company Finmeccanica (now Leonardo) to provide a "Low Level Radar" air surveillance system consisting of a network of KRONOS radars.
