The destroyer was installed with the 60 kilowatt-class High Energy Laser with Integrated Optical-dazzler and Surveillance (HELIOS). This is the first tactical laser weapon system to be integrated into existing American warships, according to manufacturer Lockheed Martin.

HELIOS (High Energy Laser with Integrated Optical-dazzler and Surveillance) is a ship-mounted directed-energy weapon system developed by Lockheed Martin for the U.S. Navy, capable of both hard-kill (destroying targets) and soft-kill (dazzling sensors) effects. It can deliver over 60 kilowatts of power, engage targets up to five miles away, and provides ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) capabilities through its integrated optical system, as seen during its successful 2024 test against a drone aboard the USS Preble.
