A recent recall of certain Great Value frozen raw shrimp sold at Walmart was triggered by the detection of Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope, potentially linked to the Fukushima nuclear disasterWhile the level found was not immediately harmful, long-term exposure could pose health risks according to the FDA. The shrimp originated from an Indonesian supplier and were distributed in several states.

Details of the Recall:
  • Cause:
Cesium-137 contamination, a radioactive material, was found in some shrimp samples.

  • Source:
The shrimp were imported from an Indonesian supplier.

  • Retailer:
Walmart recalled the affected shrimp, which were sold under the Great Value brand.

  • Affected States:
The recall was limited to Walmart locations in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia, according to the BBC.

  • Lot Codes:
    Affected shrimp had lot codes 8005540-1, 8005538-1, and 8005539-1, all with a March 15, 2027 "best-by" date.

  • FDA Response:
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that the detected Cesium-137 levels were low and did not pose an acute risk to consumers, but could pose a risk of cancer over time.

Background on Cesium-137:
  • Source:
Cesium-137 is a radioactive isotope produced in nuclear reactions and is present in trace amounts in the environment, including soil, food, and air.

  • Health Effects:
High doses can cause acute radiation syndrome, while long-term, low-dose exposure can increase the risk of cancer according to the FDA.

  • Fukushima's Role:
The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan released Cesium-137 into the environment, and although the FDA stated the contamination in the recalled shrimp did not likely originate from Fukushima, it is a potential source reports the Southern Shrimp Alliance.

Public Health Concerns:
  • Testing:
The FDA has been testing seafood imports, including shrimp, for radioactive contamination.

  • Transparency:
Some critics have called for increased transparency and more extensive testing of seafood, especially given the potential for widespread contamination from Fukushima.

  • Public Awareness:
The recall has raised awareness about the potential for radiation contamination in food and the importance of informed consumer choices.
