The United States faces a significant challenge in meeting its needs for rare earth elements (REEs) due to heavy reliance on imports, primarily from China. While the US has REE reserves and even one operational mine, it lacks the domestic infrastructure for separating and processing heavy REEs, necessitating sending its ore to China for further processing. This dependence creates vulnerabilities in areas like national security and critical technology supply chains.
