Imports of goods and services into the U.S. surged by $36.6 billion, or 10%, to a record high of $401.2 billion in January 2025, as businesses and consumers rushed to make purchases ahead of the Trump administration’s new tariffs. The influx of imports in January was widespread. Goods imports rose by $36.2 billion, driven by a $23.1 billion increase in industrial supplies and materials, with shipments of finished metal shapes rising by $20.5 billion. Additionally, imports of consumer goods climbed by $6.0 billion, fueled by higher demand for pharmaceutical preparations, and cell phones and other household items. Imports of capital goods also grew by $4.6 billion, primarily due to increased shipments of computers, computer accessories, and telecommunications equipment. source: U.S. Census Bureau
