While speaking to reporters before the first cabinet meeting held today, President Donald Trump addressed multiple topics, including his relationship with China, upcoming tariffs, and the ongoing Ukraine War.
President Trump expressed his intention to maintain a strong relationship with China, highlighting his rapport with China's President Xi. Trump stated that he expects China to make investments in the U.S., and reciprocally, the U.S. will invest in China. However, he declined to comment on whether China should abstain from using force to take control of Taiwan.
On the topic of tariffs, President Trump confirmed that they will continue, albeit not all, but a considerable number will remain in effect. He also announced that new tariffs on the European Union (EU) will be declared soon. Additionally, he confirmed that tariffs on Canada and Mexico would become effective from April 2, 2025.
Trump also commented on the EU's formation, stating it was established to disadvantage the United States.
In discussing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Trump stated that Russian President Putin had shown no intention of resolving the Ukraine War until his reelection. However, Trump expressed hope that the war will eventually end, suggesting that concessions from Putin will be necessary. He also mentioned that he would prefer to see if a deal with Russia can be reached before discussing the possibility of easing sanctions.
In relation to the situation in Gaza, Trump stated that the decision on a ceasefire should be made by Israel, labeling Hamas as a vicious group of people.
