Union (and with the rise of Putin), they began attempting to reestablish themselves as a super power. Part of this was the attempts to subjugate countries that were formerly in the soviet sphere. For some of those countries it was impossible (the baltics had already joined NATO) for others it was successful (Belarus) and for some it was still up in the air - Ukraine.
