For decades, Volvo has been a name synonymous with automotive safety, building its reputation as a leader in the field.
But times are changing. In the latest crash tests conducted by Euro NCAP, a Chinese electric vehicle managed to outperform the Swedish brand, shaking up the competition in the electric vehicle market.
The Deepal S07, produced by Changan Auto, emerged with better scores than Volvo’s EX30 in several safety categories.
Both vehicles earned the coveted five-star rating, but the numbers told a different story.
The Deepal S07 scored 95% for driver safety, compared to Volvo’s 88%. For child safety, Deepal achieved 87%, edging out the EX30’s 85%.

Weak Protection During Side Impacts
Volvo didn’t escape criticism. Euro NCAP noted moderate chest protection for rear-seat passengers in frontal collisions and weak protection during side impacts against poles.
In contrast, the Deepal S07 demonstrated stronger performance across these tests.
Volvo still held its ground in certain areas. The EX30 excelled in theft protection and pedestrian recognition, areas where its advanced technologies made a difference.
Changan Auto is a relatively new player in Europe, but it is already making waves.
The Deepal S07’s success showcases the company’s commitment to competing on safety, a key selling point for many consumers.
Partnerships with Huawei and distribution through Stellantis have bolstered Changan’s credibility.
The growing competition reflects a shift in the electric vehicle market. Established brands like Volvo are under increasing pressure to innovate and maintain their edge.
Meanwhile, new entrants like Changan are proving they can deliver vehicles that challenge the status quo.
Euro NCAP Secretary General Michiel van Ratingen praised the progress in automotive safety, saying:
“Many manufacturers are taking their safety obligations seriously. This improves road safety and integrates advanced technology.”
