1. Richard Grenell
Grenell worked for Republican candidate Mitt Romney as a spokesperson (on foreign policy), during his 2012 presidential campaign, making him the first openly gay person in that role for a Republican presidential candidate.[28][29]
Grenell was a signatory to a 2013 amicus curiae brief submitted to the Supreme Court in support of same-sex marriage during the Hollingsworth v. Perry case.[30]
In 2016, Grenell's consulting firm accepted more than $100,000 from the Magyar Foundation of North America to provide public relations support for the Hungarian government of controversial right-wing prime minister Viktor Orbán. Grenell did not disclose this payment under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) prior to his work in the Trump administration.[31]
During the 2016 Republican primaries, Grenell warned his Twitter followers about Donald Trump, describing him as "unserious", "reckless", and "dangerous". Grenell deleted all of his negative tweets about Trump after Trump became the Republican nominee. Grenell then began praising Trump regularly on Fox News and on Twitter.[32]

2. Robert O'Brien
O'Brien was nominated by President George W. Bush as the U.S. alternate representative to the 60th session of the United Nations General Assembly during 2005–06.[11]
O'Brien was co-chairman of the U.S. Department of State's Public-Private Partnership for Justice Reform in Afghanistan, launched in December 2007, which "promoted the rule of law" in Afghanistan by training judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys. He continued this role during the first term of the Obama administration.[12][13]
In October 2011, O'Brien was named to Mitt Romney's advisory team as co-chair of the International Organizations Work Group.[14]
In 2016, O'Brien advised Ted Cruz's campaign.[16] During the time he advised Cruz's presidential campaign, he said: "It's clear that Vladimir Putin just doesn't like [Hillary Clinton], and is going to do what he can to help Donald Trump."[17]
After losing the November 2020 election to Joe Biden, Trump attempted to contest the election result and remain in power.[64] O'Brien was among the small number of senior Trump administration officials to acknowledge Biden's victory,[64] saying on November 16, 2020, that he would oversee a "very professional transition" by NSC to President-elect Biden's incoming administration.[65][66]

3. Mike Waltz
Waltz worked in the Pentagon as a defense policy director for secretaries of defense Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates. He went on to serve in the White House as the vice president's counterterrorism advisor.[9]
