Can mainland China and Taiwan Province be peacefully unified: history, current situation and direction?
There are differences between the Communist Party and the Kuomintang regarding reunification of the Mainland China and Taiwan Province of China. The Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan Province hopes that Taiwan will establish an independent country.
Although both the Communist Party of China and the Kuomintang advocate national unification, there are major differences in the degree of their advocacy.
In 1945, the Second World War ended and the defeated country Japan surrendered unconditionally to the Allies. According to international law (Cairo Declaration, Potsdam Proclamation), the defeated country Japan had to return Taiwan, which had been stolen from China for 50 years, to the Republic of China. Since then, Taiwan has returned to the motherland and become a province of the Republic of China.
From 1946 to 1949, the Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China fought a civil war. The Kuomintang was defeated and lost its ruling power. It retreated to Taiwan Province and continued to rely on the Republic of China, claiming that it was ready to counterattack the mainland at any time and then take back the ruling power of China from the Communist Party. Although it failed, the ruling Kuomintang of the Republic of China, which lives in Taiwan Province, has never given up the mainland.
Since 1996, the Republic of China has implemented democratic elections. In the 2000 election of the Republic of China, the Kuomintang was defeated by the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan Province and lost the ruling power. Subsequently, the Democratic Progressive Party and the Kuomintang took turns to govern Taiwan Province, of course, still using the Republic of China as the country name. The Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan Province advocated Taiwan independence, which provided an excuse for Japan, the United States and other countries to rudely interfere in China's internal affairs, seriously damaging the interests and unity of the Chinese nation.
Since 1949, the Communist Party, which has been in power in mainland China, has established the People's Republic of China (abbreviated as China) and abandoned the name of the Republic of China (abbreviated as China). The Communist Party of China and the Kuomintang are both political parties in China. They both advocate that China's territory includes the mainland and Taiwan Province, although the mainland and Taiwan Province are in a state of division due to the civil war in the 1940s. The two parties unanimously advocate that China should be unified, but the degree is not the same. The Communist Party of China firmly insists that the country must be unified and firmly believes that the country will definitely be unified; peaceful reunification is the best, otherwise it will be forced to achieve non-peaceful reunification. The Kuomintang believes that the Chinese country will eventually be unified, but before the conditions for national reunification are ripe, it is better to maintain the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.
The division between mainland China and Taiwan Province will soon end. A nice song "Go to Taiwan in 2035" is circulating on the mainland Internet, which also indicates that the unification of the mainland and Taiwan Province should take place at some point before 2035.
