Anyhow, I was ten years old in '72 when Mark Spitz was having his epic run in the pool. For once, we had more golds than the Soviets, but my hometown paper's table was by total medals despite us finally beating them goddam Russkies in total golds.
The US press has always been consistent in sorting by total medals.
